Jakarta is a project under the Apache umbrella where the Tomcat servlet container
is developed. Tomcat supports Servlet 2.2 and JSP 1.1, and is the reference
implementation for these APIs. Tomcat can be used as a stand-alone combined
web server and servlet container, and it will be possible to use as an add-on
servlet container for other web servers. A lot of work has already been done
to make it usable as an add-on for Apache, and as far as I know there's
something like an "alpha" version available at this time.
To learn more about Jakarta and Tomcat, and join in the development if you
like, see http://jakarta.apache.org/
