I'm having similar problems. This is what I've learned and if I'm wrong I'd
appreciate a correction.
1. Just restarting Apache is not enough. Tomcat needs to be running via
startup.sh Something that is not mentioned in "Tomcat+Apache HOWTO".
2. In etc/tomcat.conf the line under "Context mapping - all requests go to
tomcat" the line
#ApJServMount /examples /root" needs to be uncommented.
