I guess I should have given the background for this line of thought.

None of us here are terribly fired up about this idea. We are all readily
aware that having the web server and db on the same box is not the optimum
solution.

The scenario is that we are trying to get a client to buy into our services
by doing a small project for them. Hence, we are trying to quote as little
as possible (i.e. little/no hardware) and prove that we can do the work they
are looking for. Once we have successfully completed the project, if we got
more work from this client (which we would), we would purchase a new box as
a dedicated web server and go from there.

So, in short this would be a temporary (3-6 month) solution to our problem
and what we really want to make sure is that our box doesn't bomb out in
those 3-6 months.

Thanks again,

Mike

That sounds like a reasonable spec thought I don't have much experience
with the load that Oracle adds (we're a Sybase shop).

However, I would *REALLY* recommend separating out the webserver/servlet
engine onto another machine if you plan to expose this to the public
Internet. You would not need a particularly large machine -- we are
planning on a Netra t1 with a warm standby for each site that we host,
with all Netra's connecting to a Sybase server box similar to your
configuration below.

I would also advocate hardware RAID rather than DiskSuite/Veritas for
the server box, as both software RAID solutions add CPU load, esp. at
RAID5.
