if i understand you correctly, i think you could load the checkboxes into an
enumeration in the receiving servlet.  only checkboxes with values will be
passed from the form.  once in the enumeration, just count through to see
how many checkboxes were returned.  give the checkboxes a unique name to
themselves, such as 'chkbx' and then use string.startsWith to see which form
elements are checkboxes.
