I am using something like this in my controller servlet:
boolean nav = false;
boolean ie = false;
String browser = request.getHeader("User-Agent");
if (browser.indexOf ("Mozilla") && (!browser.indexOf("compatible"))) nav = true;
if (browser.indexOf ("MSIE")) ie = true;
