There is a new, high-risk virus that is currently making it's way into
Attachmate's email system...VBS-Stages.A
Our new anti-virus software is catching this virus via email before it is
distributed to the user however we want to make sure that everyone is aware
of this virus and of the required McAfee Virus Definitions file version you
need to have loaded on your workstation(s).
Please read below to determine if you have the McAfee Virus Definitions file
version required and what this virus is all about.

Indications Of Infection & Payload
This worm may arrive by email in the following format:
Subject: Funny
Body: > The male and female stages of life.
Attachment: LIFE_STAGES.TXT.SHS
The virus sends out an email to all addresses in the infected user�s address
book. A sample of the email is as follows:




The virus also deletes the file REGEDIT.EXE and moves it to the Recycle Bin
with the name RECYCLED.VXD. This file is executed whenever the infected user
opens REGEDIT type files.

Method Of Infection
When the attached scrap file (LIFE_STAGES.TXT.SHS) is executed, it will fool
the user by the following text.  During this time, the worm installs itself
in the infected computer. Then it creates a registry entry, so that it is
run at every Windows startup:




How to Protect Yourself from this Virus

Ensure you have McAfee Virus Definitions file version: 4.0.4082 or higher.
To check your current version level, right click on your task bar V-Shield
icon and choose ABOUT to view your current virus definitions.  To update to
the latest Virus Definition file available, click on Virus Definition Update
and run the latest DAT installer.  Other update locations may be available
for users not at the Bellevue location.  Please contact your local Help Desk
for more information.
