My understanding is that the <jsp:useBean /> tag should be used to get a
reference to a JavaBean from a jsp page.

A side effect of this (or indeed is it a side-effect?) is that any class
that has a default constructor can be used by the tag to obtain a
reference to it.

This means you can use jsp:useBean to obtain a reference to a
java.lang.String, even a java.lang.Object etc. etc.

Is this a misuse of the original intention of the tag - or is it a
perfectly acceptable approach to take?

I'm not sure, any comments welcome.
