Chris,
  One way is to use frames and poll the server for changes.  Create a
frameset w/ your current jsp in the entire window and a new jsp in a size 0
frame.  Set the refresh interval for the invisible frame to 5 seconds or so
and have it poll the server to see if the main page requires updating.  When
it does, use javascript to tell the other frame to refresh itself.
