I can think of three solutions:

1. Send all the data for Item2 (as, say, a JavaScript array) in the first
response, then use client-side script to populate it when Item1 changes.

2. Submit a form in the onchange event of Item1 and populate Item2 in the
response.

3. Use applets that communicate with the server.

(1) is quick and clean in use but requires more coding and may be heavy on
bandwidth.
(2) is easy to code but clumsy in use.
(3) is technically much more demanding.
