Anthony,
if you just want to check if there is a syntax error in your JSP page, you
don't really need a debugger. What you need is a compiler which will report
lines with errors accurately. Tomcat's compiler is quite good in this
respect.
Now, it is true that JSP engines from different vendors usually differ in
some details, but they are mostly compliant on the basic features, so it
shouldn't be a big issue if you use Tomcat for development and JRun for
deployment.
I recommend you download an IDE which can compile your JSPs without the need
to run a debugger (JSP debuggers tend to be very slow), such as Forte for
Java from Sun, which uses Tomcat for JSP compilation internally.
[I am not saying this because I want to advertise our product, but because I
honestly think Forte is good in this respect.]
