Well, since Sun invented Java, you can always go straight to the horse's
mouth at www.java.sun.com
They also have some good tutorials covering a variety of topics - take a

As for XML, I don't know it myself, so I can't help you there.
There are also links to other goods resources at the bottom of this email
message that you might want to try.
Good luck, and take your time learning the language - don't try to rush and
