>Hi Gurus,
Judging from the quality of questions (and answers) typically on this list,
I hardly think a generic "gurus" applies. Besides, a guru wouldn't admit to
being a guru anyway.

Apology accepted.

You've got it nearly exactly backwards, sort of. An application server is a
program that delivers applications. A web server is a program that services
HTTP requests. Typically, application servers include web servers, which
vary in quality (i.e., WebLogic's web server is servicable, and Orion's is
EXCELLENT). However, the application doesn't have to be web-based; you can
use Tomcat (a very rudimentary "application server," primarily aimed only at
web applications) to access EJBs on Orion or WebLogic (or any other EJB
container) which might serve as the primary "application server." Both terms
are rather nebulous; "I worked with application server X" sounds a lot
better in an interview than "I worked with web server X."
