OK, now this is beyond absurd. I monitor this list, but have never posted
or replied. Usually when threads go on like this I watch in somewhat morbid
amusement. But Joseph here must be having a bad day. First off, the
original "off-topic" (whatever that means) post is much more innocent than
the dozen or so replies that it generates. IMHO, this entire thread sans
the original message is off-topic. You create more crap by replying with
negative comments than you do if you left these so-called off-topic
questions alone. Tell me - what is it really hurting by asking a question
such as this? If we were to ban any type of post from a list such as this,
I would recommend banning any negative, sarcastic, high-horse,
condescending, i'm-better-than-you comments. It's been said before, but
since we are all pretty much in the same business, a question regarding a
bar chart component or connection to mssql could be relevant to a number of
other people on that list. And the argument that "if you want to know about
barcharts, go register on the barchart mailing list" is pretty lame. I'm
not going to register for every possible mailing list for whose technology I
might be remotely interested - it's bad enough having to wade through all
the posts like these to find useful information in one list let alone
multiple.

I'm not condoning the practice of posting simple questions to lists, whose
answers you could likely find by doing a simple search on the web. But to
denigrate these posts and the people who post them is shameless. I suggest
you concentrate on your own work and only post positive replies that are
actually useful to the list. Perhaps, if you happen to know the answer
(which you apparently do quite often), post it and suggest that he/she also
search the web. Don't try to show your intellect by condescension - the
wise people on the list (which are the majority) either don't reply or post
a positive response.

Jeff
