Greetings,

My reason for asking the question below is very simple and very selfish.
I need a resource that I can go to get questions answered in a timely
fashion from people who are experts in their field.

I am a newbie to JSP but not to web applications development. I have been
doing ASP/COM development for the last 4-5 years. I am currently trying to
come up to speed on Java based web applications development, specifically
using JSP first simply because it is an easier transistion for me.

I got spoiled in the ASP world because of the community of developers out
there who are providing high quality assistance to people. There is
active participation on listserves (100+ asp lists on www.asplists.com),
including Microsoft people who build the technology.

As a JSP newbie, one of the first things I looked for was a high quality
listserv that served the JSP community that had active participation from
industry experts. With the plethora of Java based application servers
from Sun, IBM, Weblogic, Allaire I was expecting active participation on
multiple lists from Engineers and Technologists from those companies as
well as from community leaders and experts. Unless I have missed
something, the ONLY JSP focused list I found was this one.

I am thankful for the help that were provided by some of the
knowledgeable(sp?) people on this list. But there are also wide variety
of topics that are ongoing on this list such as (java, jdbc, app servers
etc), not to mention at various skill levels. I also have not seen a
single post from any of the major Java vendors and proponents including
Sun. That of course could be because I have not been here that long.

I am not interested in and don't care to debate the MS vs. Sun or ASP vs.
JSP issues. I have clients who use both technolgies because it makes
business sense to them. I need to be able to support both. In order to do
that I need to learn from people who are actively using this technology.
That would be the JSP community.

Since this list is hosted by Sun, I propose the following to you:

1. Split the JSP-INTEREST list into multiple lists.
e.g. JSP-Beginner,JSP-Advanced,JSP-JRun, JSP-Jakarta, JSP-JDBC etc

2. Encourage active participation from both internal employees as well as
JSP vendors and community experts and authors.

3. Moderate the list tightly (Iron fist in the velvet glove).

You (Sun) NEED to take an ACTIVE role here!

I have been seeing the rather heated exchanges that have been going on in
a couple of the other threads. While heated, the intent behind the
participants is a worthwile one. Raise the quality level of the list so
that everyone can benefit.

Everyone please remember one thing. Most of us are in this because this
stuff is FUN! Hey, the money is nice but its the fun factor that keeps us
chugging away at this. So when the discussions get heated, just remember
to not let your emotions overrule your judgement.

I think I'll shut up now :)

Later...

Anil
