 Actually, the reply was perfect: Not only did it let the
original poster know that the question was inappropriate,
it gave a solid answer about where to find the information.

 The issue is this: if you're reading the list for fun, then
it's easy to skip/delete anything you don't find immediately
interesting. But if you're reading the list to answer
questions, you have to read much more carefully. And if there
are many off-topic posts, then the on-topic questions get
lost in the noise.

 Off-topic posts drive away the very people you most want
to have on the list. A bunch of newbies posting JDBC
questions at each other isn't very useful for anyone,
especially the newbies in question.
