Hi,
You don not _need_ apache, as tomcat is a functional web server. However,
tomcat is designed _primarily_ as a JSP container and as such is not as
efficient with static HTML pages, or other non-JSP pages. Therefore, for
perfomance, it is advisable to use tomcat in conjunction with another
web-server.
The documentation for tomcat (that comes with the release) gives directions
as to how to configure the tomcat/apache pair. Essentially, apache will
simply forward any requests for *.jsp files on to tomcat for processing.
