Actually, that's not such a bad idea, although what you really want to do is
profile your application, to find out why it's so slow. I've done stuff like
this myself, and I had very acceptable performance.

Good spots to look: how are you establishing your database connection? (Use
your application server's connection pooling.) How are you getting the list
of fields? Is it cacheable? How are you generating your page? COuld that be
optimized?
