[EMAIL PROTECTED] has been our main forum for discussions on the
JSP technology. That means the list has people with widely different
levels of experience. Not just different expertise in the JSP
technology, but also different expertise in the Java platform as a
whole, and, possibly even different experience interacting with a
mailing list community.

Within this reality, there are some things that can be done to improve
everybodies' experience, but I think the first step is for everybody to
have patience and understanding with each other, and I would ask
everybody to please help with this.

Some other concrete steps that can be useful:

* Consider browsing the FAQ lists. There are periodic annoucements of
the FAQ lists, for example
http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0102&L=jsp-interest&O=A&P=73
(and, yes, I know this should be a JSP page, we are working on this...
:-]).

* Remember there are over 5K people in this mailing list. This is the
most succesful list at java.sun.com. It keeps growing except when there
is a flare, when it goes down temporarily; actually I can tell when
there is a mail flare just by looking at the number of subscribers.

* Consider checking the web archives before posting what may be a common
question. THe archives are at
http://archives.java.sun.com/archives/jsp-interest.html

* It is possible to receive postings in digest form. TO do this, send
mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body: "set JSP-INTEREST DIGEST".
THis makes is easier to go through all the postings. It does make it
harder to follow-up on threads, though. I use the digest, it is the
only way I can cope with my mail input.

* It is possible to post directly through the web interface at
http://archives.java.sun.com/archives/jsp-interest.html

Other possibilities:

* If you just want to know about weblayer related announcements, please
subscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] As usual, to subscribe send
mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body: "subscribe WEBJAVA-ANNOUNCE
lastname firstname"

* There is a [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list. This list has
had essentially zero volume so far and a small distribution list
(~250). I created it a while ago as a place-holder for more advanced
discussion focused on architectural issues and on the interrelation
between the different web-related technologies. If you have an issue
that fits that description, please feel free to start the conversation
there. The same rules of civility apply there, but it will be easier to
point introductory questions to jsp-interest.

I just checked and it looks that the web archive for webjava-advanced is
not yet working, but I've place a request to fix that.

As usual, to subscribe send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body:
"subscribe WEBJAVA-ADVANCED lastname firstname"

* There is a JDC (java developer connection) web forum at
http://forum.java.sun.com/list/discuss.sun.javaserver.pages

Ideally the JDC forums should be one and the same as the mailing lists.
We are currently reviewing the different developer support activities,
and I hope this will get fixed soon, but I can't promise it, since I am
not directly responsible for this.

Finally, one idea to consider:

We could have the notion of assigned facilitators/helpers in the mailing
list. "Duke helpers" or something like that. Different people have
done that in the past informally, but perhaps we could formalize the
concept, and assign it some sort of public recognition (sorry no
money). What do you think of this?

Thanks for your help in keeping this forum useful to as many people as
possible.
