you could use javascript to launch a popup window ('please wait while we
submit your request'), which would become the target window for the actual
submit() of form1.  When the response page is loaded into the popup, have
it call the opener.form2.submit() which again targets the popup.
the final response could then call the opener document to close the popup
and redirect to a "success" page.

a little tricky, but plenty doable...
