Hi
You need to use the TO_DATE function and specify a time format in the mask otherwise a default time of midnight is inserted. I hope this helps.
insert into date1 values(TO_DATE('17-mar-2001 12:34:01', mm-dd-yyyy hh24:mm;ss))
