package not found in import

When I try to compile my servlets, I get:

Package javax.io.IOException not found in import.
and...
Package javax.servlet.ServletException not found in import.

my code:

import javax.io.IOException;
import javax.servlet.ServletException;

public class HelloServlet extends GenericServlet{
public void service(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response)
throws ServletException, IOException{
  response.setContentType("text/html");
  PrintWriter pw = response.getWriter();
  pw.println("hello");
  pw.close();
  }
}
