I know I'll get blasted from certain quarters for saying this, but there is
so much interdependence between Java class beans, JDBC, Applets, and JSP,
it's very hard to really "separate" these issues. Yes, some questions
posted are obviously NOT related to JSP, but others fall into more of a gray
area. And I am as guilty as anyone else for posting what some people would
call "not related" JSP items to this site. But when something isn't
working, and your under the gun, then a discussion group is a good place to
post your problem on, just to see if anyone else has experienced it and has
found a solution. I for one don't have a problem deleting those emails that
I don't feel pertain to the discussion list, or that I have no advice to
offer. But not everyone is like me.
If this turns some of the better and more qualified people off this list,
then that is their choice. It is unfortunate, but it's a decision that they
make alone. For those who do want more control of the content and usage of a
discussion group list, then there is always the option to create a free,
membership only, type of forum. That way, you could limit and control that
discussion group's topics, and boot people off the list that don't meet the
qualifications or follow the rules. But blasting people on a public forum
is distracting to all the members, and unprofessional, no matter how good it
makes you feel. It's better to just ignore the email, delete it, or
unsubscribe from the list. You never know who your really "talking" to at
the other end, or whether you will ever meet them face to face in a
professional setting. Is the image your projecting of yourself (along with
your name) on this forum the image you want people to have of you, should
you ever meet with them face to face?
Well, I've said my 2 cents worth, so it's time for me to shut up. And my
thanks to everyone who did respond to my question I posted yesterday.

That's the "legalist" response. Now let me give you the personal
response to the issue of off-topic questions (similar to a comment I
had to make last week about this on SERVLET-INTEREST).
As people who recognize my name will tell you :-)I am one of the people
that knows quite a bit about JSP pages and servlets. I like to answer
questions about them -- and over the last couple of years I've answered
hundreds or thousands of such questions.
But I absolutely refuse to answer off topic questions (even when I know
the answers, which is often the case). Why? Because politeness and
respect are a two way street, and people who ask (and answer) these
questions are being impolite to those of us who are *only* interested
in talking about JSP pages here.
I was out of town from Sunday afternoon through this morning. During
that time, my mailbox accumulated well over 100 messages on JSP-
INTEREST. A quick scan of the subject lines shows me that a
depressingly large percentage of them (maybe over half) are off topic.
How likely do you think I am to even bother scanning these messages so
I can find JSP related questions to answer?
You're right ... not very likely. I don't like my time being wasted
(there's never enough time to get done what I have to do -- let alone
what I want to do, like helping people understand JSP). And ignoring
this list is not what I want, and I'm sure it's not what you want.
If you want the people who like to answer these questions to stick
around, you need to respect *our* time. The best way to do that is to
find other places to ask questions about JDBC drivers, date formatting,
JavaScript, parsing comma delimited strings, and all that kind of
stuff. The Internet is full of resources for this. Search engines can
help you find them.
But if you have a JSP related question (even partly), this is the right
place to ask. All I ask is, please don't chase me away.
