What's happening? It looks like you should get a compiler error, since
you're casting a boolean -- (session.getValue("UserID")==null) -- to a
String, then using it as a boolean. Even though it's inefficient to call a
method more than is necessary, this should work:
String UID = (session.getValue("UserID") == null) ? "" :
(String)session.getValue("UserID");
