The performance points of C++ typically aren't much better than Java,
although your results may vary on the specific application and your skill at
coding.

As far as whether JNI or out-of-process calls are more efficient... I'd say
using JNI is much harder to DO (in terms of maintenance time) but much,
much, much more efficient in terms of resource usage.

Your best bet is to use Java all the way through the process if possible
(with the 1.3 JVM and later, this is VERY possible, IMHO) and if that's not
really a workable option, use JNI.
