Actually the documentation provided by Tomcat is very helpful here:
Once you have installed Tomcat check under http://localhost:8080/index.html
and follow documentation links.

Tomcat demands that you put the java file under under web-inf folder in a
classes folder (you create the classes folder) and put the jsp files under
the examples folder in the jsp folder.

Here is a directory structure I established: (Tomcat 4.0 being the main
folder of your Tomcat installation)

Tomcat 4.0
-------------
        |
Webapps
-------------
        |
examples
-------------
        | |
jsp web-inf
-------------- -----------------
your_folder classes (your folder)

Hope this is helpful!
