I have to agree with Jeff on this one. I have 7 certifications which are in 5 major categories. MCP, MCSD, SCP, SCWCD, and BCD (weblogic certification for those not familiar with it). And I'm only a few years out of school. I thought that was pretty impressive. Well, in October of 2001 I was laid off from my old company due to economic situations, as many others. I could not even get in the door with these certs. The only thing that most interviewers seem to care about was if you had the job experience necessary. And again, being only a few years out of college, my resume was pretty sparse. Lucky for me, I was getting a lot of word of mouth recommendations and job offers from people who have worked with me before. Do as Jeff said and do some things that visually show your prowess as a developer. Get your own website going and have people look at it. If your good enough it should be easy to do but will net alot more prospects than waving pieces of paper with a photocopied signature. -Tim

Unfortunately sad times seem to bring out the worst in people. Please do not assume that all Americans share those feelings. To try to turn this conversation to a more productive subject: IMHO, certification courses and exams are simply a revenue generator for Sun Microsystems. You're better off spending some time and money building a portfolio of projects that you can point to and say "I'm responsible for that!" In an interview, what can you point to as your accomplishments? "I passed exam XYZ" doesn't thrill me as an interviewer. But "here, point your web browser at this URL" is a whole different story... you get to show off a living representation of your talent. If you can't think of something to build, contribute to an open source project. Get involved in something that you can call your own and be proud of. Not only will you have a great subject for conversation in an interview, but you'll learn a lot more real-world techniques than you would by prepping for a silly multiple-choice exam.
