Thanks to all who've been trying to help.. some of my hair remains and a variation on this one from Lloyd has done the business. We edited the Tomcat.bat file where it was setting the classpath such that it accesses the %TOMCAT_HOME%\lib folder specifically (sort of was expecting that to be the default anyway.. anyone know why it isn't - in version 3.3 at least).
All is now well and Tomcat and oracle are once again friends.. thanks for the help.
