First of all it is a process which is a class that may do some things.. Term daemon refers usually to the fact that it runs in the background.... you can program this process to do sht at a specific time and then sleep for some miliseconds and wake up again and do the same thing...
Imagine a daemon that wakesup every day at a specific time and send a mail...
