page rename with matchEnglishPlurals=true is incomplete

Horrible situation, but this bug is no longer repeatable in the sandbox
(guessing that "something" got leftover in the ReferenceManager after I undid
this.)
1) Page WikiVariables had 4 incoming links.
2) Renamed it to WikiVariable, it no longer had 4 incoming links
3) Renamed it back to WikiVariables, again had its 4 incoming-links
Trying to repeat the above fails as the Sandbox as it now thinks it has a
WikiVariable page existing already.
Suggest repeating with fresh-pages as it seems to be a one-time only bug.
Danger here is a user does such a rename and doesn't notice the incoming link
count change.
Question here is also what happens to the Sandbox after a restart/purge of
reference information cache...
