The removal of the <br /> has been in the code for some time now.
(only the i18n didn't yet follow)
If I remember well, i took it out after adding the login-status-icon
to the template.
(as suggested by you)
So now we have following things in the 'userbox':
<div class="userbox">
<span class="username anonymous">
G’day (anonymous guest)
</span>
<a ...>Log in</a>
<a ...>My Prefs</a>
</div>
This gives already quite a lot of freedom for skins.
Following your suggested patch, you'd like to have the status message
in a separate block as well ?
