Heijust a note: JUMP/OpenJUMP has a couple of tools for assessing geometries (Tools/QA menu). There is also a plugin that contains some classes from the Java Conflation Suite ( http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=118054&package_id=243601 )
