Just for general info, the Geoscience Australia web site also has useful technical info and online calculators for geodetic distances. E.g. http://www.ga.gov.au/geodesy/datums/distance.jsp I must admit though, my gut feeling is to side with SS's view that JTS would do best to stick to being a great 2D cartesian library.
