I just thought I'd let you know that we have now found the solution to this
problem. As you suspected, the fault does not lie within the JTS Topology
functions, but within the interpretation of the unioned polygons by the
modelling software that I am using. I am still slightly confused as to why the
union command does not always place an identical ending co-ordinate to the
starting co-ordinate, within the polygon, but this does not appear to cause a
problem.
