Thanks David. I just see synchronized on AbstractSTRtree.build. Once the index is built that method is doing nothing other than checking the boolean field, so while I can't see much point in it being synchronized I wouldn't have thought it was a big performance penalty either. I suppose you could avoid the fields in the index by using a builder pattern to construct an immutable index.
