Its very robust and mature - it used to be called NetComponents.
Ant uses it for the <telnet> and <ftp> tasks.

There may be better choices. I would prefer something that is part of the official Sun Java SDK or one of the highly supported projects such as http://www.apache.org/. I did a search there but did not see any references to supported libraries.
