A TRI-XML HANDS-ON WORKSHOP Tri-XML is the Triangle area XML users network, located in Research Triangle Park, NC
TITLE: Taking Advantage of XSLT's Built-in Flexibility DETAILS: * Saturday, August 16th * Noon - 3:00pm * Setup/lunch begins 11:00am (see below) * $40 per person (GREAT, LOW RATE ONLY THROUGH TRI-XML) * Bring your own laptop INSTRUCTOR: Kevin Barkan (XSLT expert and Tri-XML Presenter) DESCRIPTION: When creating a site which uses XSLT and XML, some server-side technology is usually running the show. The line between transformation via that technology and transformation via XSLT can be blurry. While there's nothing wrong with that blur, you can find yourself with data or presentation spread throughout three different kinds of files, making updates challenging. During this session we'll experiment with a strategy that takes advantage of "vanilla" XSLT and draws firm lines between data, presentation, and functionality. We'll start by examining the architecture a working site, make tweaks to see how it works, and wrap up by creating a new page. Participants should be familiar enough with XSLT, XPath and XML to have cheated their own basic stylesheets. REGISTER: Contact me at 919.244.8559 if you wish to sign up. Limited seats are available. LOGISTICS: * You will need to bring your own computer, and some setup will be required. We ask that you arrive before 11:00am to allow time to setup your computer. (A light lunch will be provided.) * If you cannot bring your own laptop, but really want to attend, contact me. We may be able to make arrangements (depending on demand), or you may be able to follow along without a computer (not ideal). INSTRUCTOR BIO: Working as a graphic designer at a marketing company in 1997, Kevin Barkan's initiation to the web came as a surprise; one day the president came in and asked him to design the company's web site. With a gigantic cube-shaped book on HTML, he got to work. In the five years since, he's grown up and away from the pure marketing/visual perspective on his first site. Kevin has spent the last four years working on a variety of web hosted applications: small office and home office tools, enterprise accounting and property management, clinical decision support software, and any neat project he could get his hands on. In 2000, Kevin started using XSLT and XML, and it changed the way he worked.
