I talked with Ben Reed one of the Fink project leads, and he said it
was a bad build of kdebase that has been fixed, so there shouldn't be
any problems using fink.
That said, you can always fetch things directly and use tools to
convert/install the deb file.

I'd highly recommend just using Fink, though - I've used it for awhile
