I think you have to assume it's this way. As I was saying in my response on the Tri-LUG list, the underlying OS *might* be allowed to treat traffic to 127.0.0.1 differently (optimize it in some way perhaps)..

But think about it like this... if you took the program
on either side and changed the IP address from 127.0.0.1
to any other legit IP address (and put the corresponding
program at that address) it should work exactly the same
(other than network latency issues).

So whether the OS does any trickery or not, I'd say you
have to assume the traffic is being treated just like
it would be if you were sending it to any other address.
