Lucene is absolutely *amazing*.  Though I'm a bit biased as I'm the 
co-author of the soon to be available Lucene in Action book -

The book is being sent to the printers _tomorrow_.  The e-book should 
be available any minute now.  The source code download will be 
available on the Manning site when the e-book goes on sale.

We've used Lucene (http://jakarta.apache.org/lucene/) for over a year 
now
with JBoss and have been pretty happy.
