Maven is more declarative "Project is..." ant is more imperitive. With ant you can do anything, with Maven you can do most things but if the abstraction doesn't work for you (leaks) then it is a pain.
I haven't read it in a year but the source to maven use to be pretty poor (not that Ant is the most elegant thing but its not toooo badly written).
