Hi,

JUG members and others are invited to attend this WUG talk on Tuesday free of charge (including refreshments and door prizes).

We' will have a presentation from a top IBM consultant on closing the gap that often exists between objectives and what Java development projects actually deliver.

I'll be honest with you - I really need to learn some lessons in this area myself, and I am really looking forward to learning some of them Tuesday evening. I think that, given the speaker's skills, a lot of us who are consultants or who work for corporations full time will find this talk well worth the time spent.

We hope to see you there.

 Regards,

 Don

Main Talk - Using Business Driven Development to Bridge the Business/IT Gap

Evolutionary forces such as rapid change, increasing complexity, and the need for flexible participation in distributed value chains to exploit new market opportunities are effecting how we develop software. Modularity, encapsulation, loose coupling, separation of concerns, reuse and composed solutions are concepts that apply to both businesses and Information Technology platforms that support them.

But what is needed is a way to ensure that IT solutions actually meet business objects and provide their intended value. Business Driven Development is an integrated approach to software development that aligns line-of-business, development, and operations teams to improve business performance through accurate and reliable capture and transformation of business intent into verifiable IT solutions.

This talk will provide an example-driven overview of the Business Driven Development process, the roles played in the process, their responsibilities, the work products they produce and consume, and the integrated tools used to view and create them.

We'll start by collecting the business goal and objectives specified by business executives, determine as-is and to-be business processes that meet those objectives, build and deploy services that realize the business processes, then test, deploy, monitor and manage the solution.

We'll tie the whole process together by using runtime monitoring to collect data on Key Performance Indicators to see if the deployed applications actually meet business goals and objectives.

This feedback can then be used to refine new goals and objectives starting the process all over again.

Along the way we'll take a closer look at the RAD 6 and RSA 6 tools used to capture, transform, and manage project artifacts, and how those tools are integrated to support the relationships between the artifacts and a seamless development process.

This talk is an encapsulation of three-day "Proof of Technology" labs that are given to major national corporations as part of IBM's "Go to Market" strategy. This approach arose out of a collaboration of IBM Technical Sales and Engineering, and is in successful use at multiple major IBM customers.

So come and attend and you will gain practical skills in implementing full-cycle Java development plans that work!

Speaker

Jim Amsden is co-author of the book "Enterprise Java Programming With IBM Websphere." He consults nationally with major IBM customers on implementing successful development strategies.. He has authored papers on UML Profiles for Business Profiles, Levels of Integration with Eclipse, and other topics, as well as taken part in panels on Cracking the Software Paradox and other topics.

Directions to the Meeting

Distance from Raleigh (17 miles) / Durham (8 miles) / Chapel Hill (12 miles)

From I-40, take Exit 280 - Davis Drive. At the end of the exit ramp, take a right (North) onto Davis Drive. Continue straight on Davis Drive for about 0.5 miles. Take a right on Cornwallis road. Go about 1/2 mile, you will cross over railroad tracks. At the IBM gate keep to the right.

If the rightmost gate is down, press on the intercom button and tell the remote guard that you are attending the WebSphere User Group meeting, and give him your name. He will open the gate for you. Go through gate, follow the road around past the first Tivoli Building, looking for signs leading to Building 500 or "Software Group." Our IBM host is Greg Ackerman - they may ask for his name.

Go through gate, follow the road around past the first Tivoli Building, looking for signs leading to Building 500 or "Software Group." It should be the third road on the left. It can be a little tricky, so please allow some extra time the first time.

It can be a little tricky, so please allow some extra time the first time.

You will see a visitors' parking lot. Turn in and park, and walk to the Building 500 lobby.

Be careful not to go too far (the second Tivoli building is too far) or you will find yourself on a one-way exit ramp and have to drive back around.

See http://www.rtpwug.org/sitemap.pdf for a map for this location.

IBM Site Security now requires names and birth dates for non-US citizens. For most nationalities, IBM will just ask for that information when you arrive at the event. However, special arrangements are required for citizens of China (PRC), Hong Kong, and Macao.. Citizens of those countries (only) who are interested in attending meetings are asked to email name and date of birth to Greg Ackerman [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Please email Greg now if you fall in this category and may be interested in attending any future meetings, as the clearance process may take some time. We apologize for this requirement, which arises from certain obligations of IBM undertaken in connection with the Lenovo sale.
