I don't know if this is a helpful remark at all, but the way cloud images work is not that they have an ubuntu user set up in the image: cloud-init creates the user account and it is called 'ubuntu' by default. So maybe if you can supply cloud-init config when booting, you can get the user to still be called that (it's the system_info.default_user.name key I think).
