i went back to the code to try make a simpler example and it now (i have been working on the code, so it has changed slightly) works ok. and i didn't save the point where it didn't work in git. so unfortunately i can't file an issue (at a glance it seemed not to be anything existing). if i see it again i'll make a copy and file something.
