Backtraces are indeed an unrelated problem - there is a new issue https://github.com/JuliaLang/julia/issues/5867 for 64-bit Windows, and the shortened backtraces I was encountering on Red Hat with my examples here https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/julia-users/X2-FoIXfQqs (fixed in master but not yet in distributed Win64 binary) was likely something odd happening due to the Sims package, I'll look into it in more detail if it comes up again.
