Well, if you do notice a place where it's happening in Base (and not for good reason), please do point it out! Most of the code for indexing "ordinary" arrays is in the first 75 lines of multidimensional.jl, and I think that part is free of such conversions. (It's also complex to read, because it's using code-generation to handle multidimensional arrays, something that thankfully you don't have to worry about here.) --Tim
