The warnings are (probably) harmless, and is because NumericExtensions 
extends some functions that was added to Julia after 0.2 was released. 
Currently we have some problems with packages that does not properly work 
with the 0.2 version of Julia. The 0.3 version is not far from being 
released, so you should be fine upgrading to the prerelease versions.

I hope someone else answers the Distance.jl related questions.
