A nice way is using Juno (Light Table) -- you add the Julia `base` 
directory to the workspace and then with Ctrl-O (Command-O for Mac) you can 
directly open any of the files there.
This also works with `methods` (Ctrl-M in Juno), `@which`, etc -- clicking 
on the link sends you to the corresponding file, all within Juno. (Doing 
the same on IJulia sends you to the version on GitHub, also a nice 
solution, provided you have internet access.)

Indeed this will give the possibility of modifying files that you don't 
want to modify. If this happens, an easy (but slightly dirty) solution is 
`git stash`.
