I don't know about the R community at all - I came here from the general direction of Matlab and Python.
Regarding maintaining this culture, I haven't yet seen any signs that we should worry - but of course, that's because what I *have* seen is that most of the people that are deeply involved also care deeply about keeping this community as nice and productive as it is.
