Metaprogramming is almost certainly the wrong paradigm here... if you are thinking of generating an expression and calling "eval" in your function, then you are doing the wrong thing. You haven't precisely defined what you mean by "Vandermonde-like matrix", though, so it's hard to give specific tips.
