Use the generic Linux binaries, or the Ubuntu PPA, 
from http://julialang.org/downloads/. I don't know why the default Ubuntu 
package for Julia isn't working, but it is roughly 8 months out of date. 
Might want to report a bug at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/julia so 
they know their packaging is broken.
